Hill College Board of Regents January 2021 meeting summary

The Hill College Board of Regents' regular meeting was held Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021. Board Chair David Teel called the meeting to order at 12:05 p.m. 

The invocation was given by Regent Jolene Lehmann.

The minutes from the December 2020 regular meeting were reviewed. Regent Rick Sullins moved to approve the minutes and Regent Dwight Lloyd seconded. The minutes were unanimously approved.

Dane Leggett, auditor, presented Consideration of Audit FY2020. Regent Sullins moved to approve the audit and was seconded by Regent William Auvenshine. The audit was approved.

Billy Don Curbo gave the Consideration of Approval of Financial Report for November and December 2020. Regent Auvenshine moved to approve the financial report as given and was seconded by Regent Lehmann. The report was approved.  

Dr. Pam Boehm gave the President’s Report:

  • Recognized Dean of Administrative Services, Debbie Gerik, and Director of Student Information Services, Kathleen Pustejovsky, for their great work and preparation to a clean audit.
  • Recognized former Hill College Foundation board member, Virginia Sullins, for dedicated service and expressed condolences to Regent Sullins on her passing.
  • Expressed condolences to the family of Ralph Hendrickson and informed the board of his recent passing. Mr. Hendrickson was a Hill College instructor at Burleson Collegiate High School.
  • Received $1.3 million in CARES funds on the first round and are due to receive $4.2 million in CARES funds for the second round with looser state and federal restrictions for spending.
  • Received $70,000 in funds from the HC Foundation for renovations and updates to the Chemistry Labs. Presented photo album by Dr. Alisa Carter, with before and after pictures.
  • Continuing to meet on TACC virtual calls with Texas community colleges in preparation of the 87th legislative session.
  • Met with Go Hillsboro committee. Objective this year is for committee to promote better communication in Hillsboro and surrounding Hill County.
  • All Burleson Higher Education Center agreements completed and signed.
  • BOTI (Board of Trustee Institute) and CCATT (Community College Association of Texas Trustees) webinars available monthly. First upcoming webinar is January 22.
  • Presented Presidential Commendation Awards for Excellence to the COVID-19 response to Lizza Trenkle, Jamie Jaska, Wendie Hernandez, Allan Dinsmore, and Spencer McGraw at All-Staff Day 2021.

Dr. Boehm presented the athletic report. Athletes are back on campus. Fall sports underway with first basketball game beginning January 20. Safety protocols will be in place for spectators.

Dr. Boehm presented the Student Success Initiative. Texas Tech/Hill College partnership graduated six graduates in the fall of 2020 and have twelve listed for graduation in spring 2021. Presently housing advisors and IT staff at the JCC and Burleson locations. 

Mr. Curbo presented Consideration of Approval of Bids. Upon recommendation of the Faculty Association and administration, the college is recommending to replace Follett with Akademos to utilize as the official Hill College bookstore. Regent Auvenshine made a motion to accept the bid and was seconded by Regent Sullins. The motion passed.

Mr. Curbo presented Consideration of Approval of Property Bids for Delinquent Tax Foreclosures. Regent Sullins motioned to accept and was seconded by Regent Lehmann. The motion passed. 

Dr. Kerry Schindler presented Consideration of Approval of Affiliation Agreement with Veterans Pardners and Hill College Criminal Justice DAAC Program. Regent Lloyd made a motion to accept the affiliation agreement and was seconded by Regent Bill Galiga. The motion passed. 

Dr. Boehm presented the Consideration of Approval of Covington Representative for HC Foundation Board. Regent Lehmann made a motion to accept Deb Hanson to represent the HC Foundation for Covington, and was seconded by Regent Karen Brackin. The motion passed unanimously.    

Jamie Jaska presented the recent Hill College personnel hires and resignations. Regent Galiga made a motion to accept the recent personnel changes and Regent Auvenshine seconded. The motion passed. Dr. Boehm informed the board of the recent promotion of Brian Bennett, Welding Coordinator, to Dean of Business and Industry Pathway. Dean Bennett brings over 20 years’ experience working in technical education.

With no further business to conduct, Regent Brackin made a motion to adjourn, Regent Lehmann seconded the motion. The meeting adjourned at 1:19 p.m.
